Adventures in Coding 1 (Oakland University)
Grade Range: 8 - 12

This camp is designed for students who have an interest in computer science. Students will learn computer programming in Scratch and Python.  They will program a Finch Robot and a Raspberry Pi.  Modules will include straight programming as well as GUI object-oriented programming.  Students will be able to unleash their creativity in open-ended exercises throughout the week and be able to take their creations home with them on a memory stick.

Algebra I for Engineers and Scientists (Franklin Wright Settlement)
Grade Range: 7 - 10

Employing a “problem-based classroom” teaching approach, the instructor will give the students a binder full of Algebra I practice problems, more advanced and deeper than those in the Readiness camps.  Students will complete problems individually and in pairs. Then they will present them on the board to their peers and the instructors having to explain all of the steps in each problem.  This class is very student-centered and will be focused on running through as many problems as possible. 

This class will take place at the Frankin Wright Settlement location located at 7375 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202. The class will be facilitated by the Oakland University staff.

CAD Product Design: Solid Works (University of Detroit Mercy)
Grade Range: 9 - 11
DAPCEP students will learn to create 3D CAD solid models using CATIA V5. Students will learn to create 2D sketches and then how to generate 3D models from the sketches. This course covers fundamentals of CAD design and provides a good foundation for the engineering academic curriculum. CATIA is one of two major CAD systems used by GM, Ford and Chrysler.

Level 2 is an informative course for students in grades 9th - 12th that will provide systemic, comprehensive training for the SAT exam, utilizing ExamExperts’ highly motivational Accelerated Retention Learning (ARL) training method. Students will complete 500 practice questions, and receive preparation in the following areas: substantive (content), procedural (technique), psychological (mental preparation), and physiological (nutrition). Subjects covered include English, mathematics, reading comprehension, writing, and science reasoning. The major focus is placed on building student confidence while eliminating test anxiety. Techniques for internet scholarship research are also taught.

Introduction to Python Programming (Triumph Church )
Grade Range: 9 - 10

Using the "Python" programming language, students will acquire basic coding skills:

  1. "Python" Basics and "Turtle Graphics"
  2. Numbers, Variables, and Loops
  3. Conditions and Random Games
  4. Functions, Timers and Animation
  5. User Interfaces and Game Programming

They will use the skills learned each week to write a program, and a modified version, before moving on to the next level. For the final week, students will work in small groups to create a project that results in a useful program that utilizes most of the coding skills they have learned. Students will be able to advance their knowledge of programming, on their own, after they complete this course. Having a basic familiarity with coding will increase the value of students to potential employers.
