ABC's of Public Speaking, Sports Journalism & College Prep Training - High School 2018
Grade Range: 9 - 11

High school students (in grades 9-12) will develop public speaking and journalism skills by participating in the Fresh Nations ABC's of Public Speaking training sessions. Some of the sessions will include:

  • Effective Presentation Skills Training
  • Speech Writing
  • Sports News Commentary
  • On Stage Speaking Techniques and Broadcast Announcing

Students will also learn how to apply visual thinking to produce practical college presentations and content media using broadcast technology. Students will receive an audio voice portfolio collection of their project work. Classes will be held at Lawrence Technological University, 21000 W. Ten Mile Rd., Don Ridler Fieldhouse (Applied Research Center), Southfield, MI 48075.

The dress code for students is all black causal (black slacks, black shirt and/or blouse) with gym shoes. 

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided at no charge.

Adventures in Coding - Oakland University - June 25th - June 29, 2018
Grade Range: 7 - 12

This camp is designed for students who have an interest in computer science. Students will learn computer programming, website coding and development, and video game design. Modules will include straight programming as well as GUI object-oriented programming.  Students will be able to unleash their creativity in open-ended exercises throughout the week and be able to take their creations home with them on a memory stick.

DTE Exploring Energy Camp (Week of August 13, 2018)
Grade Range: 7 - 12

In collaboration with DTE, Oakland University is offering an energy camp.  This energy camp will be hosted in Detroit at the Edison Boat Club.  The focus will be energy, how it affects the environment and industry, specifically DTE.  Students will be exposed to the different types of energy and its conservation through hands-on STEM modules and will see how things were used in the DTE plant which is next to the boat club.  Modules will cover circuits, voltage, Biomass boilers, etc.  Alternative energy sources including wind, solar, and hydro will also be discussed.  Students will learn about how DTE uses engineers to positively impact the communities they provide energy to.

Electrical Connections GM Tech Center, Warrren, MI STEM Camp - July 28th & August 4, 2018
Grade Range: 4 - 6

Students will receive introductory instruction from GM employees in electrical concepts.

They will learn about electrical currents, circuits, and use materials to create series and parallel circuit paths.

Building on this knowledge, they will also create an electric quiz board.

At course end, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how electric energy is transferred and changed through the use of circuits.

Students must currently be in grades 4th - 6th at the time they are registered.

The GM Tech Center is located in Warren, Michigan.

Lunch is provided.  

This class takes place on two Saturdays: July 28th and August 4th.

Students cannot enroll in both the June and July/August sessions.

This powerful camp will combine ExamExperts academic and SAT/ACT exam preparation skills training with FreshNation broadcast journalism and public speaking training. Course includes entrepreneurship training, leadership training and more! Bottom line: Get ready for a fun-filled, knowledge-filled, exciting week!

Galaxy Girls - High School - University of Michigan Ann Arbor - 2018
Grade Range: 9 - 10

The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor Summer Galaxy Academy will facilitate a week-long residential program for current 9th and 10th-grade female students. Students will explore exciting STEM coursework, with a particular focus on aerospace science and space-related fields, all while residing in dorms on campus! Students must have a 3.0 GPA with a "B" or better in both a math and science class.

Students must also email an essay expressing their interest in engineering or what they hope to accomplish by attending this camp. Essays are due June 1st and must be emailed to enrollment@dapcep.org.

Students will not be considered for this camp if the $25 application fee and required essay are not received by June 1st. In the essay, students must express their interest in STEM.

Participants are required to secure their own transportation to and from the program. Students must currently be in the 9th or 10th grade at the time of registration.

This camp is designed to introduce middle school students to the anatomy and physiology of the human body through online and face-to-face interaction. 
Students will work with Oakland University William Beaumont Medical
School faculty and medical students and Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan.
Students will conduct science investigations to discover how organisms in the
environment affect human health and the human genetic makeup. This program will foster student awareness about the multiple pathways to a career in medicine and healthcare.

DAPCEP Bus Transportation is provided and mandatory. Students must ride the bus from the Lawrence Technological University, located at 21000 West 10 Mile Rd, Southfield, MI (Science Building parking lot) to William Beaumont School of Medicine. Due to the high volume of traffic at the hospital, parents WILL NOT be allowed to drop students off at the hospital for this camp.

Water In Our Neighborhood - Summer 2018
Grade Range: 6 - 8

This camp is designed to introduce middle school students to the water cycle in the real world – and the ways humans both harm and protect our water resources. Students will explore the urban and natural water cycle through hands-on, student-centered indoor and outdoor activities, including a field trip and classroom visit from experts in the field. Students will explore real-world phenomena, plan and conduct scientific investigations, and design solutions to local water issues. This program will foster student awareness of careers in urban planning, natural resource management, water management, engineering and public service.

Lunch will be provided some days.

July 12th:  The Milliken State Park at the Detroit Riverwalk

July 18th:  Lake Erie
